Fortescue opens new Community Office in South Hedland

May 10, 2017

Fortescue Metals Group (Fortescue) has opened its new Community Office in South Hedland. The heart of Fortescue’s engagement with the local community, the Community Office interacts with more than 700 Port Hedland residents every year.

Chief Executive Officer Nev Power celebrated the opening with Port Hedland Mayor Camilo Blanco, community representatives and Fortescue team members.

Mr Power said, “Fortescue is committed to building vibrant and strong local communities in the Pilbara that will attract and retain the workforce required by the mining industry to thrive. Fundamental to this is the provision of services their families expect, including health facilities and education options.”

“We are proud of our strong connection with Port Hedland, particularly our residential workforce, and are focussed on providing training, employment and business opportunities for the local community.”

At the opening, Mr Power announced Fortescue has reduced its payment terms for Aboriginal and Pilbara-based small businesses to 14 days, in line with long term commitments to providing business development opportunities.

“Thriving small businesses are fundamental to the economic prosperity of a community and we are dedicated to working with our suppliers to ensure sustainable business opportunities,” Mr Power said.
